Govt plans to double FSI in city : Bole tho Bombay can grow vertically!!
This is really good news for the city starved of real estate, being an island city there is only one way the city can grow and that’s vertical. Though the FSI of 4 is peanuts compared to the FSI of Dubai or NY who have FSI of 35-40, this is definitely a good beginning.
If I was the CM I would rebuild the entire Marine Drive with skyscrapers of 100 floors each and change office timings from 7 to 3pm to reduce crowd during peak hours.
DNA has the story here

The decision though taken 2 years after it was first recommended by then CM’s Task force’s report on its Vision 2013 “Transforming Mumbai into a World Class city”
Read the comprehensive report : www.maharashtra.gov.in/english/reports/taskforce.pdf
FSI - The ratio of the total floor area of a building or buildings to the gross area of the lot on which the building or buildings are located. For example, a floor space index (FSI) of 2.0 would indicate that the total floor area of a building could be up to 2 times the gross area of the lot on which it is located.

In a city like Mumbai the only way to grow is up.
I dont know if this is a step in the right direction. As it is the developers can get as much fsi they want, so in a way this idea of fsi goes out of the window. But anyways, if we consider a city like mumbai, where we are talking about vision 2013 and on the other hand power cuts looming over our heads, we forget the most important item in the list, i.e. infrastructure. There is no problem in growing vertically provided one has developed enough infrastructure for it. Just imagine a piece of land on which currently 10,000 people reside; by growing vertically we manage to create space for another 90,000 and get the tally upto 1,00,000. awesome work!!!, but do we have enough water supply, electricity, markets, hospitals , etc to cater to rise in density, do we have enough road network to avoid bottlenecks at these places where towers will stand next to each other. The most obvious thing to do is to develop infrastructure first and then think of growing vertically.
I would suggest one to go to goregaon and see the western corridor i.e. the area between the S.V road and the highway. According to Bye Laws of Mumbai the fsi there would not permit any building above 7 storeys high(considering the largest plot in this corridor) still tere stands a building with many a floors more than 7. so i guess the government isnt doing any favours here by increasing the FSI but it seems like some desperate measure to save its own neck
I liked your idea of changing office timeings. Probably variable office timings all over mumbai with a considerable amount of overlapping working hours between related industries might have a solution to Mumbais peak hour problems.
