Learn Marathi or You are Out of Luck
This is one entry in the “Now..thats Fucked Up”
On the one hand Bombay (or Mumbai as you may) is trying to be the next Shanghai or Singapore or any of the other world cities. And on the other hand, we cannot get rid of our petty regionalistic mindset.
Bombay is what it is today inspite of the “Marathi Manus” and not because of them. Let me be clear. This is not an anti-marathi post. But when I read something like this, I am baffled.
A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation General Administrat-ion Department circular dated April 22 to all 52 departments of the civic body tells non-Marathi speaking employees to clear a Marathi test on June 24 or lose their next increment.[link]
It gets even more stupid…
Non-Marathi speaking employees who did not have Marathi as a subject in SSC will have to take the test.”
“We are busy collecting information on employees who have not cleared Marathi during their SSC exam.”
Lets be frank. Civic services in the city do not attract the smartest and the brightest. One of the main reasons is that it is not thought of as a career for anyone who gets a college education. And now even if someone did join the BMC, he/she is out of luck if he/she didnt take Marathi in SSC.
All I can say is……”Techi Aaila…..BMC cha Dok Firlas Vatta”

“Bombay is what it is today inspite of the “Marathi Manus” and not because of them.”
Any particular reason for saying this? This is a ‘fact-free’ statement, Arzan, and certainly surprising from a Mumbai metblogger.
Doesn’t this remark from you show the ‘petty and regionalistic mindset’ that you profess to not like?
And by the way, your Marathi is not very good, either…it should be ‘tyaachyaa Ailaa…’ and firlay, not firlas…
Let us not forget that Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and has depended heavily on the ‘hinterland’, both for human as well as other resources. It is a symbiotic relationship. Denying the Maharashtrian component of Mumbai shows a lack of understanding and appreciation of facts.
i agree with nandan. recently i got the information from an economist, who probed harshd mehta case, that in bombay stock exchange, there r marathi people r working in very big numbers. they where not only employees but the brokers also. it is an example that where, few years ago, gujrati dominance was known to all. but now situation is changing. its an example. what u see todays mumbai, had very big contribution of marathi manus, such as bhau daji lad etc. in case of contribution, if only money matters, then social, cultural sectors has no value?
