Very often we have chastised the politicians for their wrongdoings, and there are too many to list here. However once in a while a politician tries to do good but sadly gets beaten up.

A BJP corporator, who tried to expose the Octroi mafia, was severely beaten up by unidentified men on Wednesday morning.

The corporator, Manoj Kotak was brutally beaten up along with two others by a mob of 25 men, using iron rods and stones, near the toll naka on the Eastern Express Highway in Mulund. Kotak wanted to expose how the Octroi mafia was functioning. He had informed the Vigilance Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday that he wanted to raid the Octroi naka and wanted help from the BMC. [link]

For years the octroi mafia has been the bane of traders and other businesses. Their corruption is legendary. An example of this is that when the state government in the mid 90’s wanted to abolish octroi, the octroi employees went on strike. The state government made it clear then that their jobs were not at risk, but they still went on strike. Why ? Because the income they generate from bribes is mind numbingly high. That’s why.

I hope the corporator follows this up with the proper authorities. If you read the article it is clearly evident that the police is hand in glove with the mafia and gets its palms greased with regularity.
